In the year 1871, the presumptuous Miss Bethany Swenson would never have imagined that her move to Denver would result in her falling in love with a man who had murdered his wife or that because of her innate curiosity, she would end up consorting with the ladies from the seedy side of town.

Bittersweet is a completed historical romance set in frontier Denver. It runs the gamut of human emotions from unrequited love, loyalty, jealousy, and anger, replete with murder, violence, and frontier justice. Bethany Swenson finds herself in a situation where she suspects that the handsome James O’Brien, to whom she is inexplicably drawn, years ago murdered his adulterous first wife. Fearing her family’s disapproval, she is hesitant to share her confused feelings toward him because of his tainted reputation. She is also hesitant to report the evidence she has uncovered because the town sheriff is James’ brother. She thus turns to writing a journal in which she confides her innermost thoughts and pens clues that eventually aid in unraveling the mystery. This thrilling historical romance is a collection of Bethany’s most unusual and inviting journal entries. She is quick to learn that living in the untamed Colorado territory can indeed be bittersweet.

I seem to be in the minority regarding this one.

For being a 'modern woman', as Bethany frequently remarks, she doesn't seem to have much sense. After James O'Brien's little girl demonstrates how and explains that her father killed her mother, Bethany still agrees to tutor the little girl when O'Brien asks her. Because....she's attracted to him.

The style of the book was interesting, it being a journal Bethany writes in from time to time. However, there wasn't much consistency. One moment the little girl is a spoiled, rude child and then the next, Bethany is describing her as a little angel. Also, one chapter Bethany states she is nineteen and then a few chapters later, she is eighteen. Maybe she said she was almost nineteen? I don't know.

This is a great story. Fell in love with the characters. There was romance, murder, mystery. Love how she wrote in journal form. I just found another great author. Clean, sweet romance. Great book!
This book is amazing! I read it in one day... it was that good. Annette is one of my greatest leaders that I ever had. I knew there was something that I liked about her the first day that I met her ;) She honestly deserves to be published by a publishing company and hopefully if her name gets out there that someone will notice her and BEG her to actually publish her work. I know I would fly home just to have her sign my very own copies of her books.

I like stories that are not from today. This was perfect and old-fashioned. I enjoy a good story that takes me away from now and its reality. We seem to be inundated with reality and reality shows. To me you should be able to get lost in a good book.
I have read this book before. I am sure that I will read it again. Everyone should have a James in their life. Those girls are truly blessed to have such a wonderful and understanding father. In other words James has an amazing father-in-law. This journal brought two people together in the best way possible.
Bittersweet is a darling romance novel set in Wild West of Denver in the late 1800's. The characters were fun and enjoyable- easy to fall in love with. As you join Bethany on her quest to follow her heart after moving from bustling New York City to the dusty, and sometimes savage, town of Denver, you can't help but get caught up in her silly ways and adorable attributes as she stumbles into one adventure after another. Not only a great love story, but Bethany is an amazing baker and all her scrumptious recipes are included in the book!! I would recommend Bittersweet to anyone looking for a great way to curl up and relax for an afternoon of romance and adventure- Bittersweet will make you excited and anxious to see what else Ms. Anthony might have in store for her readers!
Very good, clean historical romance with love, jealousy, anger, frustration. I really enjoyed the journal format that it was written in. The heroine was terrific in that she was way more open and honest with herself and her father in what she wanted from life. Great example of not judging the best looking guys as the best catch.
I loved this book! I've read one of her other books and just devoured it (Beneath the Aspens)! This one proved to be the same.

I really enjoyed the perspective of this one. At first I was dubious that it was from a journal persepective but it actually really made the story. And such a clean romance!

Luckily, this time I had a fully charged battery before I went to bed to finish this book - no extension cords for me last night!

Thanks for such a fabulous story Annette! I can't wait for the next installment!
