DEAD Confrontation eBook TW Brown Shawn Conn

According to the author,TW Brown, this is the halfway point in his zombie apocalypse epic. The winter drags on for the remaining humans and although zombies are always to be feared and continue to take their toll, it is the depravity of mankind itself along with mother nature, during this post zombie awakening, that causes the greatest suffering and death. One of the main characters and leaders within the story so far is eliminated and the narration of the continuing tale of this man's survivor group is picked up by, up until this point, one of the more minor characters. How he and the the more military trained members of this group handle betrayal, after meeting up with another group of survivors, is quite shocking. One of the other main characters and leader of another small group of survivors is maimed by frostbite, but continues on with a hastily retrieved prosthesis. A unique solution for the deteriorating condition of the downs syndrome girl he had previously rescued is found and he along with his small group leave the unfriendly confines of a group of amazonian warrior women to once again strike out on their own. In an ironic twist a cruel female military leader and a narcissistic Egyptian "pharaoh" meet their separate fates by the hands of one of those they had thought to dominate. After fighting through the zombies, a British woman and her girl sidekick, with the help of another survivor, reach their goal in London. At this point the object of their struggle appears to be ludicrous, but perhaps the author has a yet to be revealed reason for its importance to the woman and storyline. The first zombie winter has not been kind to pregnant women and now only one such woman in the story continues to carry her unborn child. Two other survivor groups seem to have found some respite, and as this book ends, spring appears to be just around the corner. Also, there may be an inkling of hope as those with greater integrity begin to consider what it will take to start bringing together all the far flung bits of remaining humanity in the post winter months.

DEAD Confrontation eBook TW Brown Shawn Conn Reviews

I got started on TW Brown with his Zomblog series and moved on to his Dead series. If you're a fan of zombie books, I would highly recommend both, although I feel the Dead series is the better of the two. This book is the sixth in the Dead series.

The books are well written, covering a large cast of well-written characters but the main focus of the series is Steve. It's very easy to get drawn into their world and caught up in their struggles to survive. There are people you like and people you don't, much like in the real world. One thing you can count on--no matter how hard you try or how well you plan, something is bound to happen to threaten or even ruin your efforts. That's true in the real world but amplified a hundredfold in the Zombie Apocalypse. No character is safe.

The main character in the series, Steve, is well drawn and you follow his evolution through the series. He's a regular good guy thrown into a set of circumstances that no one (Well, except maybe us zombie fans) could predict and, for the most part, rises to the occasion. He's not one of those superhuman zombie fighters you see in a lot of books and he's not perfect but he tries and does well more often than not.

One of the few drawbacks in the series for me personally is a tendency to go a little too often to the well of his surprise at being the leader and his doubts about his ability to be that leader. It's not a huge problem though and I find Steve to be a huge improvement over the main character in his Zomblog series who had a much worse tendency to get self-righteous and somewhat preachy.

I would have rated this book the full 5 stars but one thing in this story really stuck in my craw. I don't want to do any major spoilers but Steve's reaction to something toward the end of the book just struck me as totally out of character given his experience and reactions to similar situations preceding it.

I understand how difficult what he should have done would be and why he didn't want to do it and I get what makes this somewhat different from the other times he's been in the position. That said, his failure to follow through with what he knows has to be done is out of character and endangers others, including people he is equally (if not more) attached to. It really bugged me.

Even with this one gripe, I would highly recommend both the book and the series. TW Brown is one of the best writers in this genre and I'm always excited to see a new book from him.
TW Brown's zombie survival death march continues to entertain and grip the imagination.

In contrast to its immediate predecessors, Confrontation closes down and snips off many of the frayed loose ends hanging around. There's a significant cull and clean out of characters, both central and cameo, and a discernible value shift in survivor philosophy which (I imagine) is a way of setting up for the second half of what Brown says is to be a 12-part series. However knowing that the author is set against using lock-step story outlines, it's possible to assume, more prosaically I guess, that he's grown bored with trying to squeeze any more toothpaste out of certain characters and scenarios.

But you never quite know with Mr Brown!

Keynote impressions
1. Steve's made his dash. Time to rest thou good and faithful servant...and make way for Big Boys playing a Big Boys Game by Big Boys Rules.
2. Kevin's god-complex looks set to implode - his decision making is 5050 win-loss. Not good Boss Man. Let a Strong Woman take the reins laddie-bucks.
3. Billy begins to pupate.
4. Brutal ruthlessness among all lead characters (apart from Steve). What's a broken nose and a handful of busted fingers when you need to extract vital information? This is great and amps up the story. No more Mister Nice.
5. Vix and Emma in London.... Hmmm, I still don't know where this going. Do you Mr Brown? (I don't trust Vix as far as I could throw her...watch out Emma!)
6. Tight like a tigah...what on earth are we gonna do with you? (Please not another cutsie puppy dog, yuck.)

The surprise inclusion of Ava the Ghoul's novella was a wonderful gesture and a neat way of decompressing from Confrontation's intensity...well played whoever thought of that wee marketing/business development wheeze.
